AMERICAN CURL
Unmistakable cat breed american curl. Just look at their ears and if they are curled backwards it is american curl.
ears curl back from the face in a smooth arc toward the center of the back of the skull; they are otherwise perfectly normal cats.
The American Curl is a medium size cat (7-11 lbs) with no health handicaps associated with the curled ears. They are strong, healthy cats remarkably free of genetic defects that affect many purebred cats, and will not reach maturity until 2-3 years of age. They are
alert animals with an elegant appearance and a sweet, open expression.
The American Curl may have either curled ears or straight ears. If the cat's ears are curled, it will not be apparent until two or three days after the birth, and will take their final form after four months. The curled ears should be hard and stiff to the touch. The longhairs have a plush, silky coat, and the shorthairs have a thick, non-wooly coat, and is also silky.
Both longhair and shorthair Curls have soft, silky coats, but the longhair Curl has the distinction of sporting a beautiful plumed tail.
The American Curl may have three degrees of curl - first degree, second degree, or third degree. The third degree is the preferred one. Luxurious tufts of fur sprout from the bottom of the ears. In difference from some other cats Curls are very people-oriented, faithful, affectionate soulmates adjusting remarkably fast to other pets, children, and new situations. People say they are very dog-like in their attentiveness to their owners, following them around so not to miss anything. When introduced into a new home, Curl's seem to have an inherent respect for the current pet occupants, giving them plenty of room to adjust to the new kid on the block. Not overly talkative, the Curl's curiosity and intelligence is expressed through little trill-like cooing sounds. It si said that they retain their kitten-like personality well throughout adulthood and are playfull all the way to the old age.
ORIGIN:The breed is the result of a spontaneous mutation which occurred in a cat in Lakewood , California in 1981 . The first cat, a black female domestic cat, was found and taken in by Joe and Grace Ruga who named her Shulamith. At first they thougth it was a stray cat, but Mrs. Ruga couln't not to feed the beautifull black cat. They took her into their house, and into their hearts and named her Shulamith, meaning "black but comely". Very soon she delivered her first litter of kittens. Out of four kittens, two had the same curly ears as Shulamith. The geneticists checked those ears and concluded that it is spontaneous mutation and it was dominant gene. Without and side effects. All American Curls descend from her, the foundation female. And if they want to be true Curls, they must trace their pedigree back to Shulamith, the foundation female
