AUSTRALIAN MIST

The Australian Mist is a medium-sized shorthaired cat, with a round head and large, expressive eyes. The coat is short but resilient, with a plump-furred tail. They are delicately spotted and available in a wide range of soft colors; warm brown, blue, chocolate, lilac, gold and peach. Eyes are large and expressive in a range of greens. The nose, chin and whisker pads are broad giving the face a generous expression. Australian Mists with their highly affectionate personalities make excellent house cats. As kittens they are lively, but sober. They are very people-centered and are eager to crawl into the nearest lap with or without invitation, and constantly hang around to see what people are doing. They don't fret if people are not around. The Australian Mist cat is very devoted to the master and possesses little of cats' independence, which makes them companions for the home workers and children. Older cats in need of rehoming are available at times. These cats settle in well, and are often preferred by elderly or working buyers. Australian Mist Cats are able to do well without walks and are happy to live wholly indoors, provided with toys to play and plenty of human or another cats' company.

ORIGIN: They were developed from three breeds, Abyssinian, Burmese and domestic shorthair. More than 30 cats were used at start of developing the breed. Burmese contributed the dilution for the colors, the "laid back" nature, four of the colors and some of the pattern, as well as general size and conformation.  From the Abyssinian came the beautiful ticking to develop the pattern, two colors, and a touch of lively intelligence. Domestics contributed to the best spots, but primarily to vigor, with a dose of "uncosseted" cat genes improving teeth, kidneys, mothering qualities, and helping to stabilize litter sizes around the feline average of four. All this is lasting for over twenty years now, and the cat is growing in popularity.
