The Bombay is the blackest cat in the cat fancy. Once the cat is mature, the coat is black to the root, short, tight and extremely shiny. Even the paw pads are black. It's hard to say what is more eye-catching about the Bombay, the copper penny eyes or the shiny black coat. The combination is absolutely striking. The body is strong and muscular, and move very elegantly. With legs correctly proportionated against the body, and round head with short but distinctive muzzle. Round, wide-set, golden to copper coloured eyes, and medium sized, broad and slightly rounded wide set ears. You can't believe it is not a small panther.
The Bombay is a wonderful union of both parent breeds. He loves attention and to be carried around, often on his caregiver's shoulder. In fact, Bombays are truly "lap fungus!" You cannot get them off you once they are there. Your Bombay will follow you from room to room and will almost always have something to say about what you are doing. They are wonderful with company, children and even with dogs. You won't find a Bombay hiding under the bed when company arrives, because she must have their attention, so be ready to warn your guests. Bombay will be part of the greeting committee. They are very friendly with other cats in everything except one thing, she must eat first. Everybody else must wait.
ORIGIN: This lovely breed of cat is the result of the dream of a long-time cat breeder and exhibitor, Nikki Horner of Louisville, Kentucky. The Bombay is a man-made breed, a cross between a black American Shorthair and a sable Burmese. Both of these cats were Grand Champions. Mrs. Horner knew exactly what she wanted, little black panther, sweet and beautifull. After several years of crossbreeding, in 1958th a black litter was born and breed was created. The name was given from similaritiy with black panther from India.. The breed was officially accepted 1976 by CFA.
