Cornish rex

A Cornish Rex is a breed of domestic cat, with no hair except for down. The coat of a Cornish Rex is extremely fine and soft to the touch. However, their light coat means that they are only suitable for indoor living in warm and dry conditions. Consequently, these cats tend to hang around light bulbs, the tops of computer monitors, and other warm places. Cornish Rexes also have a mild cheesy smell peculiar to the breed; this odor comes from scent glands in the paws.

The Cornish Rex is an adventurous cat and is very intelligent. It can readily adapt to new situations and will explore wherever it can go, jumping into refrigerators, examining washing machines, etc. Because they can be very inventive in their play humans often consider its antics to be deliberately mischievous, but this is anthropomorphism. They just hate being bored. They would invent games just to make you play with them, and usually involves something the cat can't do on its own, so people must play with them. The Rex is extremely curious, seeks out the company of people and is friendly towards other companion animals. They are extremely affectionate and people-oriented. It is a suitable pet for timid children. Because shedding of their fur is minimal comparing to other cat breeds, they are considered hypoallergenic, but are not so truly. The Cornish Rex is a potential choice for a minority people who are allergic to cats, but before buying one please refer to your doctor and nearby vet.

ORIGIN: Cornish Rex cats are not from outer space and, in spite of their resemblance to ancient Egyptian statues, they are not from Egypt either. In 1950, a curly-coated male kitten, called Kallibunker, was born. It happened on a farm in Cornwall, England, hence the name. Nina Ennismore, owner, recognized this curly coat as similar to the rex mutation found in rabbits. By backcrossing Kallibunker to his mother, more rex kittens were produced. The conclusion was that rex gene was recessive. In 1957, two of Kallibunkers' descendants were sent to USA to found a breed there. They were crossed with Siamese, and offsprings were called “Si-rex”, with long whippy tails and big ears. At the same time in UK , other Kallibunkers' descendants were crossed with British shorthairs and Burmese. Mixing with Devon rex was NOT allowed, and still isn't.
