MUNCHKIN

The Munchkins are medium sized cats and are similar to large number of other breeds but with one huge difference; they have short legs. Both front and hind legs are of the same length and about in half length of other cat breeds. But that doesn't make their legs any weaker. Because of their short stature munchkins are particularly adept at climbing and jumping, although their jumps are rather short. They are usually raised as indoor cats, although they are reported to be extremely active, agile and fast runners. Those who have spent time around barns have proven to be extremely good hunters. Munchkins can have either short or long coats in a wide variety of colors. Because Munchkin can have various predecessors their temperament can vary. But something always seems to be the same, no mater how old the Munchkin is, the cat always act as a kitten. They are not aggressive cats, but are very social and out-going. They like to play, and run through the apartment. Their short legs work in their advantage, as they do not slip easily, and their short legs allow them to scramble faster and corner sharper.

ORIGIN: Created by a random mutation that produced a cat with extremely short legs the Munchkin cat is a relatively new breed. The breed was begun in 1983 when Sandra Hochenedel found an extremely short-legged black cat living under a trailer in Louisiana. The cat, Blackberry, was pregnant and half of her kittens were born short-legged. One of Blackberry's kittens, a tomcat named Tolouse, became the father of a breeding program and helped establish the breed in North America. The munchkin gene is an autosomal dominant one meaning all litters with at least one munchkin parent have the possibility of having all munchkin kittens, all normal kittens, or a combination of munchkins and normal kittens.
The Munchkin breed is not recognised by all registering associations and is specifically banned by the Fédération Internationale Féline FIFe and other European registries
