OCICAT

The Ocicat is relatively new and still-rare breed of cat which has spots resembling a 'wild' cat and the temperament of a domestic cat, named for its resemblance to the ocelot. A rather large breed, they are muscular and solidly built cats. Average Ocicat is about 6kg (13lb) when fully grown (males tend to be much larger then females). Most outstanding is the Ocicat's rich “jungle-like” coat pattern of distinctive spots. Originally these spots were either chestnut-brown on cream background or light chocolate on cream, both with golden eyes. But silver variety is also possible, gene coming from American shorthair during the development of the breed. The wedge-shaped head with a broad muzzle makes up for a pointed face. Eyes are almond-shaped and slightly tilted upwards. They have “mascara lines” similar to Egyptian Mau. Even though the Ocicat looks very wild, it is not. It is actually very sociable and gentle-tempered, it is absolutely devoted to its people. They are very friendly toward unknown people. If you have guest, warn them to expect the cat in their laps at the moment they sit down. If your work makes you absent for hours and you have Ocicat, acquire some other animal for companionship also. Their sociable nature makes them very depressed if they are alone.

ORIGIN: Tonga was the first Ocicat born in 1964. He was result of mating between a male Chocolate Point Siamese and a female hybrid (Abyssinian/Seal Point Siamese). He was called the “Accicat” to describe he is an accident, and later “Ocelette” for similarity with Ocelot. Later, Virginia Daly repeated mating and female Dalai Talua was born. These two cats are foundation of a new breed. Somewhat later, Tom Brown crossbred them with American Shorthair to enhance development of the breed.
