SELKIRK REX
The Selkirk Rex is large sized cat. By some people often referred to with a bad joke „The cat with the bad hair day“. Their body is stocky, strong and heavy boned. Their head is round with no flat part. The face look somewhat flat, and in combination with their round eyes gives them somewhat confused look. They have highly curled hair, including the whiskers ( vibrissae ) which are brittle and not unlikely to break as they grow. The coat
has a woolly look and feel. Unlike the Devon Rex and Cornish Rex , the hair is of normal length and not partly missing, and there are longhair and shorthair varieties. Also unlike the other Rexes, the Selkirk gene is dominant, meaning that curly kittens can be born in the same litter with straight haired kittens. And if crossed with other breed, there is great chance for curly offspring. They are an incredibly patient, loving, and tolerant cats making them great pets.
ORIGIN: The Selkirk Rex originated in America in 1987, with a cat named Miss DePesto, who was bred to a black Persian ( PhotoFinish of Deekay) , producing three Selkirk Rexes and three straight-haired cats. During the development of the breed American Shorthairs, Persians, Exotics and British Shorthairs have been used as out crosses. The American Shorthair has now been discontinued as a breeding partner. In Australia Persians, Exotics and British are accepted out crosses until 2015.
