SOKOKE / KADZONZO / KHADZONZOS
The Sokoke or Kadzonzos are medium sized cats. Their body is slightly elongated, elegant but muscular. Their legs are long and thin, with hind legs slightly longer then front. Because of longness and shape of their legs, their movement is similar to the cheetah's movement. And they are very fast for their size. Their coat have tabby-pattern that resembles a blotched tabby, mostly in brown colors. The coat of the Sokoke is elastic, very short, lying close to the body and there is no undercoat. The head is somewhat small compared to the body. The heat is flat at the top. Ears are always up as if listening, broad at the base with rounded tips often ending in tufts.
ORIGIN: Their original name is Khadzonzo meaning „looks like a tree bark“ in Swahili. They originate from Arabuko Sokoke Forest near Watamu in Kenya. Although
they live close to people, they are also found in the wild as feral examples. By the looks, they closely resemble African Wildcat (Felis Libica), and they are probably very closely related to them. There are differences in scientific opinion, because some think they camo from a branch of Taite wildcat, while others believe Sokoke are missing link in explaining of tabby pattern in domestic cats. Modern history for the breed starts in 1978 when Jeni Slater, experienced horse breeder, found a litter in her plantation. These cats where very different from other household cats in Kenya, which are cobby built, and have different spots. She took them to her home and start breeding them. Later in 1984 Gloria Moeldrup brought a pair in Denmark, and after 1985 when they were shown for the first time in cat show they were recognized as a breed in 1990.
