TONKINESE / Supalak / Thong Daeng
The Tonkinese are a medium-sized short-haired cat breed distinguished by points as with Siamese and Himalayans . Tonkinese cats are commonly trim and muscular cats. Some claim that the appearance of the breed is closer to the original appearance of the Siamese, before Siamese breeders developed today's triangular head and very leggy body. Tonks exhibit a wide variety of coat colors and patterns. The three main patterns are sepia
(solid), mink, and pointed. The mink variety is considered most desirable for show in some associations. The most commonly accepted colors are: lilac (platinum), champagne (chocolate), blue, and natural (seal). Typically, sepia patterned cats have gold or green eyes, cats with the pointed pattern are blue-eyed, and the mink cats have a shade of aquamarine . A great deal of subtle variation exists in colors and patterns, and Tonkinese body color darkens with age to some degree in all patterns.
ORIGIN: Tonkinese available today are result of Burmese and Siamese crossing. But recent researches show that it is much older breed. It was mentioned in The Cat-Book Poem from Ayudha , Siam (1350-1767). And it also concluded that the mother cat of modern Burmese, Wong Mau was actually a Tonkinese. In their motherland ( Thailand ) are known as „Copper cat of Siam “ or Supalak or Thong Daeng. Some of the breeders are trying to acquire some „natural“ Tonks from Thailand in order to expand the gene pool used in breeding, but without inserting more Burmese or Siamese.
