German Shepherd / Alsatian / Deutsche Schäferhund

The German shepherd or Alsatian is very famous dog breed and it is widely spreaded all over the world. It is so famous that most of the people don't need pictures to know how this dog looks like.

Appearance: The German Shepherd Dog is a large, slightly elongated bodied and strongly, muscularly built dog. It is handsome-looking dog. The fur is a double-coat and can be either short or long haired. It varies in color, coming in many different shades, mostly cream (tan) and brown, but also solid black or white. Dogs with coats that have tricolored hair (black and white with either brown or red) are called sable or agouti. Different kennel clubs have different standards for the breed according to size, weight, coat color, and structure. But one rule is same with all the clubs; white German shepherds are not allowed. They will not be pedigreed.

Time of origin: 1800s

Country of origin: Germany

Primary usage: Herding sheep

History: The breed known in today form was originated by Captain Max von Stephanitz in the late 19th century . At first bred for sheep herding and as all working dog, today is often found working as a guard dog , police dog , or companion pet than in the field working sheep. German shepherd was first exhibited in dog show in Hanover , Germany in 1882.

Temperament: Considered to be one of the most, if not the most, intelligent and versatile breeds in existence. They have very strong sense of loyalty and obedience, and can be trained to attack and release on command. If they do not obey to command, they have been poorly bred and trained. Because of poor training many people perceive them as aggressive and dangerous. Breed itself is not aggressive but protective. They bond to their owners to the extreme level and do not like to be separated. They also love children and are ready to suffer all kind of games children invent around them. Almost each individual German Shepherd is ready to give its life for its owner at any time.
