Chihuahua

The Chihuahua gets their names from Chihuahua region in Mexico. Very famous and smallest dog breed in the world. Because their size can be variable, only their weight is standardized for the show.

Appearance: They must have between 1.5 and three kg (3.3 to 6.6 lb), although smaller ones are acceptable in the show ring. Dogs which are not prepared for the show can reach up to 5kg (10 lb). They can come in many colors, from solid blacks to solid whites, spotted, or a variety of other colors like fawn (tan), chocolate, blue (gray), silver, tricolor (chocolate, blue, or black with tan and white markings), brindle, and merle. And each of these colors vary in shades and tones, as fawn can be a term to describe a tan dog from a very pale cream to a deep (almost red) tan, or any shade in between, and the chocolate coloration can range from a milky light shade of brown, to a deep mahogany brown, to a dark brown that is almost black.

Time of origin: 1800s

Country of origin: Mexico

Primary usage: Companion dog

History: Many people believe that Chihuahuas are descendants of an ancient, similar, but slightly larger breed associated with royalty in Aztec civilizations known as the Techichi. But now many scientists reject that theory because there's none archaeological finding of that ancient dog breed. So DNA of present Chihuahuas cannot be verified to be linked to that ancient breed. The most current theory holds that Spanish merchants brought Chihuahuas to Spain by way of their trade routes with China and from there to Mexico. This is supported by well documented practice in China concerning dwarfing animals and plants.

Temperament: Chihuahuas are very alert but intelligent dog breed. If properly trained they can be perfect companion dog. They devote themselves to one person, and sometimes they can show jealousy to other interacting with that person. Because they are small and fragile they are not good dogs for the children. Children sometimes can be too rough toward them and that can hurt the dog. Their size also makes them ideal for people living in apartments. But bear in mind that Chihuahuas tend to forget their size and they can be quite aggressive toward much larger dogs, end result could be injury on Chihuahua even if other dog didn't intend to do that.
